Week 8: Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology:

Assistive Technology involves any use of technology or device to help a student perform and maintain at their highest learning level possible. This can be achieved in many ways. As long as the teacher, student, parents and Special Education team are on top of things, success will be the only thing possible.


Mild Disabilities:

Mild disabilities include learning and emotional disabilities and mental retardation. If a student was struggling with reading, an assistive technology product they could use would be a program such as Simon Sounds It Out by Scientific Learning.|16135|simon%20sounds%20it%20out||S|p|14806583584&gclid=COW69Ye4k7QCFal7Qgod6EEACw
Teachers are up to date with student’s progress and can monitor growth and keep track of whether this device is working for the students maximum learning.  Another interesting device that helps students is the Quicktionary Reading Pen.


Moderate to Severe Disabilities:

These students need more help in the life skills area. Software that helps them with time management and daily living with money management is a great resource. This website shows a software called Dollars and Cents which can be an ipad app download as well. This allows students more practice with counting money, making change and how to spend money. Alternative keyboards also help these students in their interaction with computers to make the process more enjoyable and less frustrating.


Physical Disabilities:

Motor movement is a hard thing for students with physical disabilities. Joysticks attached to the computer make things easier for pointing and clicking as opposed to the regular mouse. Switches as found on, make using computers for giving answers much easier as accommodations can be made based on physical disabilities.


Sensory Disabilities:

For students who are visually impaired products like iZoom are handy to help them function in a classroom setting or computer lab setting and succeed as if there was no impairment. Other websites that offer switches and other sensory interactions are, and


At-Risk Behaviors/ Situations:

Websites like,  provide great insight and feedback to students. This motivates at risk students to learn and interact with the online tutorials and games and increase knowledge they could not get from reading a textbook. By allowing them time to engage in online activities they will grasp information more quickly and efficiently.


Gifts and Talents:

Give these students more in depth activities in which to participate. Webquests, web design, presentations  and other portfolios or brochures are things they can work on and gain more knowledge that will keep them on their own pace and not be slowed down by work they get bored with. Week 7: Web 2.0 Assignment/ Twitter Reflection

Web 2.0 Assignment:

For the Web 2.0 assignment I started with the Glogster portion on the State of Alabama facts for elementary students. This would be a great introduction for them to ease into a study on the state of Alabama in a mini social studies unit. They have access to fun facts they can take notes on and use to begin research on certain Alabama cities.

They would also view the Animoto video I created previewing certain landmarks in some important Alabama cities. They could use one of these for research purposes or pick another in one of the cities mentioned.

Twitter Reflection:

Upon beginning this Technology in Education class, I was unsure of which types of technology we would be involved in. A bit hesitate to go all out and create a blog  and twitter because I always said I would never be the one to use those forms of social media. Mainly because I am not always dedicated to staying up to date and posting on a frequent basis. I had never used twitter and had only seen social posts nothing more so I was unaware of the up to date information that could be found on educational topics. As the semester continued I stuck with the “tweeting” and reading articles and other links and slowly grew to warm up to the idea of twitter for education development.

I am not certain that I would use it with my students in the beginning, as I still have a lot to learn myself. However, this could be a good resource for teachers to use on a grade level for ideas, lessons, technology products and app suggestions. It would be great to have other teachers tweeting ideas to implement on grade level instead of being the only class to try new things. It would be great for conversation starters at data meetings and planning periods to see what works best for the students.

Three tweeters I found most helpful this semester were Punflay, Edutopia and Scholastic Teachers. Punflay was a great resource for apps for iPhone and iPad for students. They had a wealth of information on what resources are most helpful in different fields of study. Edutopia was helpful in giving insight as to what works in the classroom, how to reach students in new ways and how to work together as a teacher team to broaden teaching styles and students horizons. Scholastic Teachers gives up to date reading materials and ideas to reach across the curriculum and standards to make learning more unique and fun for all involved.

Overall, even after starting out as a skeptic of twitter; I have found interesting tips and advice to learn and grow myself as an educator. My teaching style will be affected as will my attitude. I am more open at this point to new technology. Instead of being so hard against the changes and new experiences; I am rolling in the wealth of awesome information they bring about.

Week 6 Blog Post

4 Apps to be used on the iPad in the elementary classroom:

1. Geography USA- makes memorizing state facts and maps much more exciting as students can work their way thru quizzes while earning points and money and gaining better cars to go on a virtual road trip!

2. Solar Walk- gives student a 3D view of the solar system and allows them to see information up close and personal on planets in relation to the sun and other planets.

3. Visible Body 3D Human Anatomy Atlas- Perfect resource for older grades gives a in depth look at all body systems.

4. Word Wall HD- Helps students learn to read and write. Develops confidence by using all learning styles to engage students. Good for ESL students who are having to work a bit harder to improve their skills.

Week 5 Blog Assignment:

This week involves different types of instructional software. This is used for instruction and added instructional support for students. Drill and Practice, tutorial, simulation, instructional games, problem solving and integrated learning systems are easily used in the classroom.


Drill and Practice: A good way to see where students stand on multiplication facts is to have available software such as Students are able to see where they stand and which tables they need more practice with before major tests.

Tutorial: These are good for self paced learning for students with good feedback in return for completion. This would be a good center activity to have students work on at lap tops in whatever subject matter you wanted.

Simulation: This is great for science classes where demonstrations and experiments are not able to be done frequently. Gives students “hands on” activities they are able to enjoy and learn from. gives easy to use instructions on performing virtual dissections.

Instructional Games: Jeopardy Review Generator was a game we always played to review content when I was in school. It is an interactive and fun way to review for unit tests or major quizzes.

Problem Solving: Focuses on content area skills or environments that students must work their way thru to obtain correct answers. Most students would love these type of games due to having to use all aspects of their skills to complete levels.

Integrated Learning Systems: Provide computer instruction and reports back to instructors letting them know where students stand on scores. Compass Learning monitors students progress and feedback is given to help them personalize each students plan of assignments and studies.

Using all of these software opportunities broadens the students ability to succeed within the classroom setting and allows you as the instructor the ability to see their progress on more than just weekly and unit testing.

Week 4 Assignment:

This week I found a link on-line to an interesting article about technology advances in the classroom and how they benefit the students involved : .

I am a big advocate for iPads and iPods along with laptops for one on one enrichment with students. I am not on board however with cell phone use in early grades, as the article does suggest high school help and learning with cell phones. The benefits of students having access to tablet use could increase learning and their grades!

That listed several cool apps for those of you who already have access to iPad use in your classroom!

I feel like these two technology forms would be useful in many center activities with elementary students, intervention help times, and individual times throughout the day where certain Apps or activities could be planned for instructional aide purposes depending on what each student needed.

I have seen many cool apps for Science including interactive dissection lab activities, experiments, 3d Brain activities and more space apps than you can count! History takes you back to olden times where students can see and learn more they would during a 30 minute whole group instruction period where technology is not used first hand. We all know and can agree the Math help and practice that is available is a positive experience for students who get to experience it first hand! The iPad and iPod touch can be super useful in all areas of teaching not just the ones mentioned. If funded in schools I believe grades could see major improvement as students become interested and engaged; as well as excited about learning!

The use of student response systems otherwise known as clickers is a great resource to have and be able to use in the classroom. The ease of polling the class to find out who is comprehending lessons, without embarrassing shy students  or calling on the same students over and over makes teaching and assessing much easier. By using clickers, the teacher is able to see who is grasping info and who needs more time on the subject or other reinforcement activities planned for their intervention time periods. This allows test results to be predicted in advance based on the results form the polls in class. “As standards and accountability loom ever larger on the horizon, continuous assessment becomes more important, making it easier to guide student progress and to ensure success on tests (Roblyer & Doering 2012).”
